Barbara couldn’t believe her eyes when her pregnancy test came back positive. She had attributed her sudden weight gain and mood swings to other factors, but in reality, she was expecting. Her disbelief only grew when Dr. Carter delivered even more surprising news during her hospital visit.
“Do you hear the heartbeats, Barbara?” the doctor asked.
“Heartbeats?” she repeated, confused.
“Yes, Barbara. You’re pregnant with twins.”
Barbara was stunned. Motherhood is a beautiful experience, but at her age, she was already a mother—and a grandmother to two girls. Overwhelmed, she asked, “Doctor, is it possible to terminate the pregnancy?”
The doctor shook his head. “I’m afraid it’s too late. Your reports show some irregularities, and I believe you’re at risk for a premature delivery. Terminating now would endanger your life.”
Tears welled in Barbara’s eyes. She wasn’t prepared for this, and she dreaded how her daughter, Melanie, would react. Yet, she had no choice but to break the news.
When she called Melanie, her daughter burst into laughter, thinking it was a joke. But when she checked her phone and saw the ultrasound, her amusement turned to shock.
“Mom, this is unbelievable! What are you going to do?”
“I wanted to terminate, but it’s not safe,” Barbara admitted.
