Hollywood star Val Kilmer, celebrated for his roles in some of the most iconic films of the 1980s and 90s, including Top Gun and Batman Forever, has passed away at the age of 65.
Kilmer succumbed to pneumonia on Tuesday in Los Angeles, as confirmed by his daughter, Mercedes, in statements to U.S. media. Although he was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, his daughter noted that he later recovered.

Undergoing a tracheostomy impacted his voice and put his acting career on hold, but Kilmer made a triumphant return in 2022, reprising his role as Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick alongside Tom Cruise. The sequel seamlessly wove his real-life health struggles into the storyline, portraying his once-arrogant rival to Maverick ultimately succumbing to illness.
Kilmer’s diverse career saw him embody legendary figures such as Jim Morrison in 1991’s The Doors and don Batman’s cape in Batman Forever (1995), a film that achieved box office success despite mixed reviews.

Following news of his passing, heartfelt tributes have flooded social media. Actor Josh Brolin shared a nostalgic photo of the two on Instagram, writing, “See ya, pal. I’m going to miss you.”
The Remarkable Journey of Val Kilmer
Born Val Edward Kilmer on December 31, 1959, he was raised in a middle-class Los Angeles family. At just 17, he became the youngest student at the time to gain admission to the prestigious Juilliard School.
His early career took off with comedic hits like Top Secret! (1984) and Real Genius (1985), but it was his role as Iceman in 1986’s Top Gun that propelled him to stardom, solidifying his place in Hollywood history.

Kilmer took on a variety of roles, starring in the fantasy epic Willow and the crime thriller Kill Me Again, both alongside British actress Joanne Whalley, whom he married in 1988. The couple had two children before parting ways.
In 1997, he starred as the elusive master criminal in The Saint, inspired by Leslie Charteris’ novels and the 1960s TV series featuring Roger Moore. A year earlier, he appeared in The Island of Dr. Moreau with Marlon Brando, though the troubled production became one of Hollywood’s most infamous failures, with the director vowing never to work with Kilmer again due to his difficult reputation on set.

In 2021, Kilmer shared his personal and professional highs and lows through his documentary Val, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival. The film included 40 years of home footage, offering an intimate glimpse into his life, including his battle with cancer and his post-surgery communication through a voice box.
His return as Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick a year later was met with widespread acclaim. Reflecting on Kilmer’s performance, Tom Cruise remarked, “I’ve known Val for decades, and for him to come back and play that character… he’s such a powerful actor that he instantly became that character again.”
