In February 2020, Shannen Doherty revealed that she was battling stage 4 cancer. The actress, best known for her roles in Beverly Hills, 90210, and Charmed, has passed away at the age of 53, as confirmed by ET.
Leslie Sloane, her longtime publicist, released a statement saying, “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13th, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease.”
The statement continued, “The devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. Please respect the family’s request for privacy at this difficult time so that they may mourn in peace.”
In June, Doherty emotionally announced on her podcast, Let’s Be Clear, that she would be starting chemotherapy for her advanced-stage breast cancer, which had progressed. She shared her struggles, stating, “At first, I believed everything was going well. I am having to go back on chemotherapy, and it is really difficult. The idea of going through that all over again has completely destroyed me.”
Just over a week before her passing, the last episode of Let’s Be Clear aired on July 8. In December 2023, during an interview with ET, Doherty emphasized the importance of her podcast in sharing her cancer battle and personal experiences.
Doherty had undergone brain surgery when her cancer returned, and around the same time, she discovered her then-husband Kurt Iswarienko’s alleged infidelity, leading to their divorce. Despite these challenges, she remained hopeful about her future and continued to work on various projects.
In 2015, Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer, which went into remission in 2017 after several rounds of chemotherapy. However, in 2020, she disclosed that her cancer had returned and spread to stage 4. She remained optimistic and active in raising awareness and funds for cancer research.
Born on April 12, 1971, in Memphis, Tennessee, Doherty began her career as a child actress, appearing in various TV series and films. She gained fame for her roles in Heathers, Beverly Hills, 90210, and Charmed. Over her career, she became known for her resilience and dedication to her craft.
Despite her personal struggles, Doherty’s legacy continues through her work and the inspiration she provided to many. She is survived by her family, who will remember her for her strength and courage.
