Colin Farrell recently opened up about his life with his 20-year-old son, James, who was born with Angelman syndrome, a rare neuro-genetic disorder. In a rare glimpse into their relationship, Farrell shared that James, who now sports a “lovely big” mustache reminiscent of Tom Selleck, is the inspiration behind the newly established Colin Farrell Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to supporting individuals with special needs and their families.

Reflecting on his journey, Farrell recalled leading a team of athletes into Croke Park during the 2003 Special Olympics opening ceremony, an event he continues to support. Little did he know at the time that he would soon become a father to a child with special needs. James was born on September 12, 2003, with Farrell and his then-partner, model Kim Bordenave. Farrell remembers noticing that James “just wasn’t hitting benchmarks” around 18 months old, realizing something was amiss developmentally.

In 2007, James was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome, a condition characterized by delayed development, speech and balance difficulties, and other challenges. Farrell described a particularly emotional moment when James, at nearly four years old, took his first steps—a milestone that brought Farrell to tears.

Farrell spoke with pride about his son, describing him as a “happy young man” who leads a good life despite the challenges. As James approaches his 21st birthday, Farrell expressed concerns about the support systems that often disappear once individuals with special needs reach adulthood. He hopes for a world that treats James with kindness and respect.

In response to these concerns, Farrell founded the Colin Farrell Foundation, aimed at improving the lives of those with intellectual disabilities through education, awareness, and advocacy. Speaking about the foundation’s launch, Farrell emphasized that it’s all in James’s honor, believing that his son would wholeheartedly support the initiative.

Farrell’s deep love and pride for his son shine through as he describes James as a “cheeky,” “bright,” and “bold” young man who is ready to spread his wings and embrace the world.
