Jennifer Lopez has officially filed for divorce from Ben Affleck after two years of marriage, multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE. The filing took place on Tuesday, Aug. 20, in the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
Lopez listed the separation date as April 26, 2024, and notably filed the paperwork herself, without an attorney. The date also marked the second anniversary of the couple’s traditional wedding in Georgia, following their initial Las Vegas nuptials on July 17, 2022.
Just hours before Lopez’s filing, Affleck returned to Los Angeles after dropping off his and Jennifer Garner’s daughter, Violet, at Yale University. Affleck was seen arriving back in L.A. with Garner, and the two left the airport together.
According to a source who spoke to PEOPLE, Affleck had been very focused on preparing Violet for her move to college amid ongoing marital tensions with Lopez. The source described the occasion as significant for the entire family, with everyone excited about the milestone.
Days prior to the divorce filing, Affleck celebrated his 52nd birthday with a quiet gathering at home, surrounded by his children. Lopez also made an appearance during the celebration, which was just what Affleck had wanted—low-key and spent with his kids, who gave him gifts. The insider noted that Affleck spent most of his birthday at home with his children and didn’t venture out to celebrate.
