Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are still going strong after over two decades of marriage!

On Sunday, September 1, the beloved stars from the ’90s and 2000s—who first met while filming I Know What You Did Last Summer and married in 2002—celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary with a sweet and simple Instagram post.

Along with a cozy photo of the couple—where Prinze, 48, is seen embracing Gellar, 47—Gellar shared a brief caption: “22 @realfreddieprinze.”

Their romance wasn’t instantaneous. In a 2001 interview with PEOPLE, Prinze admitted they didn’t hit it off right away. “We really didn’t dig each other,” he confessed, though that changed over time. Prinze remembered a turning point: “One day I gave her a ride to the gym. We talked, and she was a cool chick.”

Initially, their relationship was purely platonic. “We were friends for a good two years before we went on a date,” Prinze revealed. “We knew all the faults in each other.” Gellar added that their first date was a bit of a chance occurrence: “We were supposed to go with someone else who didn’t show up, so we decided to go anyway. We were just two people catching up.”

After their first date, Prinze knew Gellar was the one for him. “I didn’t go on dates with other girls,” he said.

The couple, who share two children—daughter Charlotte, 14, and son Rocky, 11—have worked together on several projects since their film debut. They famously portrayed Fred and Daphne in the Scooby-Doo movies and celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2022 by sharing wedding photos and taking a playful jab at Howard Stern, who had doubted their marriage’s longevity.

Gellar posted a screenshot of Stern’s skepticism and wrote, “I think you owe us.” Prinze added, “She will not forget.”
