James Earl Jones, known for his distinctive voice that spanned generations, was recognized by many as the voice of Darth Vader in Star Wars and for his role in The Great White Hope.
His exceptional talent left a lasting mark on the entertainment industry. Alongside his successful career, Jones enjoyed a fulfilling personal life after marrying his second wife, Cecilia Hart.
Sadly, Jones passed away at 93 years old. His representatives confirmed that the Broadway icon and EGOT winner died peacefully at his home in Dutchess County, New York, on September 9. Born on January 17, 1931, in Arkabutla, Mississippi, Jones grew up with his grandparents in Michigan, where he struggled with a severe stutter as a child.
A teacher eventually helped him overcome this challenge, and he later pursued a career in acting after trying his hand at the military and medicine.
Jones’ acting career flourished in the late 1950s, and he went on to become a fixture in Hollywood with notable works like The Great White Hope, Fences, and as the voice of Mufasa in The Lion King. He also won two Tony Awards, an honorary Academy Award, and various other accolades throughout his career.
Jones met Hart on the set of Paris, a 1979 TV series. They eventually married in 1982, after starring together in a Broadway production of Othello. Despite the challenges of being an interracial couple in a time when such relationships were often frowned upon, they built a happy life together, raising their son, Flynn. Their love endured for over three decades until Hart’s passing in 2016.
Cecilia Hart died at the age of 68 after battling ovarian cancer. Jones continued working in the industry and remained beloved by fans even after her death, cementing his place as one of Hollywood’s most respected and admired figures.
