Country music legend George Strait is mourning the heartbreaking loss of two significant figures in his life, expressing that he “won’t ever be the same.”

In a social media post, Strait, 71, paid tribute to his longtime band member, Gene Elders, and his manager of 45 years, Ervine “Erv” Woolsey, both of whom passed away within hours of each other. The double loss has left Strait deeply saddened.

“Hard to believe we lost two of our music family members on the same day,” Strait shared. “Our Ace In the Hole treasured band member Gene Elders passed away yesterday afternoon, shortly after we lost Erv. All of our prayers go out to both families. Me and the band won’t ever be the same without our brother Gene. We loved him so much. Go play with Mike again, Geno. We’ll come join you guys later.”

Elders, an Austin, Texas native, was a beloved member of Strait’s Ace In the Hole band since 1984, playing fiddle and mandolin. He had also spent 11 years performing with Lyle Lovett’s Large Band.

Strait’s manager, Woolsey, was not only a key figure in Strait’s career but also a close friend. Known for his influence in the country music scene, Woolsey passed away due to complications from surgery. Strait noted that despite Woolsey’s determination and strength, the challenges were too great.

Fans and industry figures alike shared their condolences. Many acknowledged the profound impact Woolsey had on country music, with Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, crediting Woolsey’s conviction for launching Strait’s career and championing the traditional country sound.

Our hearts go out to George Strait and the families of Gene Elders and Ervine Woolsey during this difficult time.
