A chilling video released by the U.S. Coast Guard offers a closer glimpse of the Titan submersible wreckage lying on the ocean floor of the North Atlantic. This footage, taken by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), was shared as part of a two-week hearing investigating the June 2023 tragedy.
In the video description, the Coast Guard confirmed that the footage provided “conclusive evidence” of the Titan’s catastrophic implosion, which killed all five passengers aboard. Earlier, on Sept. 16, officials had released a photo showing the sub’s tail cone embedded in the seabed more than 12,000 feet below the surface. Human remains were found among the debris.
The five victims of the disaster were explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, adventurer Hamish Harding, father and son Shahzada and Suleman Dawood, and OceanGate co-founder Stockton Rush. The Titan lost contact with the surface on June 18, four days before the wreckage was discovered.
As part of the hearing, officials revealed the sub’s final messages, indicating that communication was lost shortly after 10:47 a.m. on June 18. Testimonies from former OceanGate employees shed light on potential flaws in the sub’s design and operational protocols.
One contractor, Tym Catterson, said the implosion was instantaneous, meaning the passengers likely had no idea what was coming. David Lochridge, a former OceanGate director, also testified, expressing concerns about safety issues within the company.
The investigation is expected to explore evidence regarding the submersible’s design, operation, and safety procedures, with the final report to be issued after the hearings conclude. OceanGate, which has suspended all operations, expressed its condolences to the victims’ families.
