During his time at the San Sebastián Film Festival, Johnny Depp surprised everyone by making a special visit to the Donostia University Hospital in San Sebastián, Spain, on Thursday, September 26.
Dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean series, the 61-year-old actor spent time with young patients in the pediatrics and oncology wards. The hospital shared the news on social media, along with photos of Depp interacting with the children, staying in character throughout his visit, and sharing laughter.
In a tweet, the hospital expressed deep gratitude to Depp for his time and energy, as well as to the San Sebastián Film Festival for facilitating the visit. According to the local newspaper, El Diario Vasco, Depp has a history of visiting children’s hospitals worldwide as Jack Sparrow, with previous stops in cities like Vancouver, Paris, London, and Brisbane.
Depp, best known for his role in Pirates of the Caribbean films like The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) and Dead Man’s Chest (2006), was in San Sebastián to promote his latest directorial project, Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, about the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.
During a press conference on September 24, Depp shared his personal connection to the film’s subject, hinting at his own public struggles. He remarked humorously, “I’ve had my share of issues here and there, but I’m alright,” possibly referencing his highly publicized 2022 defamation trial with Amber Heard.
Following the trial, Heard, now living in Madrid with her daughter, reached a $1 million settlement with Depp. Meanwhile, Depp remains busy with new projects, including an immersive exhibition called A Bunch of Stuff that will debut in New York City on October 4.
