Born William Foster Hayes III on June 5, 1925, in Harvey, Illinois, Bill came from a family that treasured music. His parents, Betty Hayes, a teacher, and William Foster Hayes II, an executive at an encyclopedia company, fostered a love for music in Bill and his siblings.
