Carlton Smith, a police officer at West Virginia University, has gained significant attention online for his remarkable rendition of the national anthem during a men’s basketball game. On January 12, Smith was asked at the last minute to perform the anthem after the scheduled singer was delayed due to snow.
Although surprised by the request, Smith, who has been with the university’s police department for four years and is well-known among his colleagues for his exceptional singing talent, agreed to take the stage.
Smith, now 28, has a notable musical background, having reached the Hollywood round of American Idol thirteen years ago. His performance at the WVU Coliseum earned him a roaring applause from the 14,000 attendees and quickly went viral, amassing over 2 million views on YouTube.
In his spare time, Smith enjoys pursuing his passion for singing, often performing with a band during open mic nights and lending his voice to the church choir. Reflecting on his unexpected opportunity, he recalled how he was approached for the favor, asked for a drink of water, and then taken to the court to showcase his talent. Singing is one of Smith’s greatest joys, and he always seeks opportunities to indulge in his passion.
