Liam Payne, one of the founding members of the popular British-Irish boy band One Direction, tragically passed away on Wednesday in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after falling from the third floor of the Hotel Casa Sur. He was 31.

According to La Nación, hotel staff had contacted the police before the incident to report “an aggressive man who may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

“We were alerted to a person in the internal courtyard of Casa Sur Hotel. First responders arrived and confirmed the man’s death. It was later discovered he was a singer from a musical group. Sadly, his injuries from the fall were fatal, and there was no possibility of resuscitation,” said Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system.

Crescenti mentioned that while they were awaiting the results of an autopsy, it appeared that Payne had suffered “a skull fracture, a very serious injury.”

Payne gained international fame as a member of One Direction, the pop sensation formed by Simon Cowell on the seventh season of The X-Factor UK in 2010. Alongside Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, Payne contributed to the group’s massive success. Between 2011 and 2015, they released five studio albums, all of which went platinum in the U.S., reaching No. 1 or No. 2 in both the UK and U.S., and consistently landing in the Top 10 globally.

The group achieved four No. 1 singles in the UK: their debut hit “What Makes You Beautiful,” “Little Things,” “One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)”—which Payne directed the video for—and “Drag Me Down.” An additional five singles peaked at No. 2, solidifying One Direction’s status as one of the best-selling boy bands in history.

One Direction experienced somewhat less chart dominance in the U.S. but still managed to secure half a dozen Top 10 singles and seven million-selling hits. Additionally, three other singles earned gold certification in America.

The band was also the focus of the 2013 documentary One Direction: This Is Us, which offered an “intimate all-access look at life on the road for the global music phenomenon.” Released by Sony Pictures, the film explored the group’s rapid rise to fame, from their modest hometown origins to The X Factor and eventually performing at iconic venues like London’s O2 Arena. This Is Us grossed over $68 million worldwide.

One Direction also released two platinum-selling longform videos in the U.S.: Up All Night: The Live Tour (2012), which had a brief theatrical release overseas, and Where We Are: Live in San Remo (2014).

As a solo artist, Payne found success with two UK Top 10 singles: “Strip That Down” and “For You,” the latter featured on the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack. Last year, he postponed his South American solo tour to recover from a kidney infection.

In addition to his music career, Payne made cameo appearances as himself in a 2012 episode of iCarly and later voiced his character in a 2016 episode of Family Guy.

Recently, Payne made headlines due to his turbulent relationship with ex-fiancée, model and social media personality Maya Henry. She publicly shared details about their breakup and reportedly sought a cease-and-desist order to prevent further contact from Payne.
