It’s hard to imagine anyone’s reaction when they come across a litter of five adorable puppies in their own backyard, but that’s exactly what Craig McGettrick experienced. While tending to his garden in England, he and a friend stumbled upon an unexpected find: an old mattress. Little did they know what lay beneath it.
To Craig’s astonishment, he discovered five cute puppies nestled under the mattress. He quickly contacted a nearby animal shelter and shared some heartwarming photos on Facebook, hoping to find these precious pups a loving home.

However, within a few hours, he would uncover a remarkable truth about the puppies that would change everything…
On that typical day in 2017, Craig was doing his part to clean up the neighborhood when he found something completely unexpected. Hidden beneath the mattress were five tiny creatures that looked like either puppies or perhaps kittens.
“I thought those were the only two options,” Craig said. He speculated that someone had left them there, assuming he was responsible for their removal.
After finding the adorable pups, Craig reached out to the local animal shelter for help. Before handing them over, he posted pictures on Facebook in hopes of finding new owners. The images quickly gained traction and caught the attention of Martin Hemmington, founder of the National Fox Welfare Society.

Upon seeing the photos, Martin called Craig, but not for the reason Craig expected. “A kind woman named Beccie reached out to us through our Facebook page, asking about the adorable creatures, wondering if they were fox cubs,” Martin shared in a heartfelt post. They quickly confirmed Beccie’s suspicion: the “puppies” were actually fox cubs that had been mistakenly taken to a rescue center in Liverpool.
Craig’s assumption about the puppies turned into a delightful surprise as he learned he had rescued five adorable fox cubs. Paul McDonald, a local rescuer known as The Fox Man, explained that fox cubs can often be mistaken for puppies due to their appearance.
Martin contacted Paul to check on the hungry cubs, who were crying out for their mother. Paul returned the fox cubs to the very spot where Craig had found them, taking care to handle them gently.
Soon after, their mother appeared, making her way toward the cubs. The reunion was heartwarming, with the vixen clearly delighted to have her little ones back.
“Vixens often leave their cubs in the den while they venture out on their own,” Paul explained.
Thanks to the collective efforts of Craig, Beccie, Martin, and all those who shared the photos, the mother fox was joyfully reunited with her precious cubs—a fantastic outcome for all involved!
