It’s clear that the past year has been incredibly challenging. With so many difficulties in recent months, it’s truly heartwarming to witness people stepping up to make life a little easier for others.
Massey English returns to the courtroom for the second year in a row, ready to share her story. This time, she is joined by her 3-year-old daughter, Kaya, who quickly wins over Judge Caprio’s heart.
During her last court appearance, Massey was cited for an unpaid parking ticket and had to bring her son, who was suffering from a severely broken arm.
Now, she faces another hearing for the same issue. Judge Caprio playfully remarks, “We usually incarcerate repeat offenders.” In response, Massey lifts Kaya’s hand and says, “I can’t take her to jail with me though, so.” The judge chuckles and then asks her to explain her situation.
Massey shares that she had gone downtown to obtain Kaya’s birth certificate following the passing of her husband. Afterward, she stopped for a quick meal, only to return to her car and find a parking ticket—yet another burden in an already difficult year.
She also reveals that Kaya had spent a lot of time with her father before he tragically lost his battle with cancer. Moved by her words, Judge Caprio remembers Massey’s previous visit to his courtroom and acknowledges the hardships she has endured.
Wanting to lift the little girl’s spirits, he invites Kaya to join him at the podium. She eagerly walks over and takes a seat right in front of the microphone.
Judge Caprio then encourages Kaya to say, “Not guilty!” With a big smile, the little girl repeats the phrase and playfully taps the gavel, bringing immense joy to her mother.
