The star was found unresponsive in her Manhattan apartment near Columbus Circle on the morning of February 26. Emergency responders arrived shortly after 8:00 a.m. and pronounced her dead at the scene.

At the time, authorities noted that “criminality was not suspected,” and her family requested that no autopsy be performed for religious reasons, given there were no signs of foul play.

Now, the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed that Trachtenberg died of natural causes due to complications from diabetes mellitus. Toxicology results helped clarify the cause of death in the absence of a full autopsy.

Following her passing, the family released a brief statement: “The family requests privacy for their loss. There are no further details at this time.”

A Bright Light from an Early Age
Born and raised in New York City, Michelle’s entertainment career began at just three years old with TV commercials. She quickly moved into television with a role on All My Children before skyrocketing to fame in 1996 as Harriet M. Welsch in Harriet the Spy—Nickelodeon’s very first feature film.

Trachtenberg later reflected on the experience, crediting co-star Rosie O’Donnell for her unwavering support on set. “There was a lot required of me. I’m extremely grateful for the experience,” she told Entertainment Tonight in 2001.

Her natural charm and impeccable comedic timing made her a staple of Nickelodeon’s golden era, with appearances on The Adventures of Pete & Pete and as host of Truth or Scare, which earned her a Daytime Emmy nomination.

From Teen Angst to TV Villainy
In 2000, Michelle joined the cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Dawn Summers, Buffy’s younger sister. While her character’s teenage angst divided fans, Michelle took the criticism with grace. “Most of the haters don’t have the guts to say things in person,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I rarely get the ‘Oh she ruined the show.’ I do get a lot of ‘Oh she was so whiny!’ Hi, were you a teenager?”

Her Buffy co-star James Marsters paid tribute to her on Instagram, writing: “My heart is heavy today. We have lost a beautiful soul. Michelle was fiercely intelligent, howlingly funny, and a very talented person.”

After Buffy, Trachtenberg took on memorable roles in EuroTrip (2004) and Disney’s Ice Princess (2005), where she starred alongside Kim Cattrall. Cattrall also mourned her passing online, writing, “Rest in peace sweet Michelle,” accompanied by a behind-the-scenes photo.

But it was her role as Georgina Sparks on Gossip Girl that brought out a different side of Michelle—mischievous, unpredictable, and endlessly entertaining. From 2008 to 2012, she played the show’s most deliciously dramatic character, earning a Teen Choice Award nomination for Choice TV Villain in 2012. She reprised the role in HBO Max’s Gossip Girl reboot in 2023.

“It’s kind of easy to be evil when you’re saying evil things,” she told Seventeen in 2009. “It’s definitely a lot more fun than playing the good girl.”

In later years, Trachtenberg made guest appearances on House, Weeds, NCIS: Los Angeles, Sleepy Hollow, and lent her voice to Robot Chicken.

A Final Goodbye
Just days before her passing, Michelle was active on social media, sharing throwback red carpet photos and heartfelt reflections. In one post, she wrote: “A memory, a magical night in #NewYork. I remember feeling like Cinderella. Wishing everyone an ethereal weekend.”

Her death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from co-stars and friends. Rosie O’Donnell called her passing “heartbreaking,” adding, “I loved her very much.” Fellow Nickelodeon stars Melissa Joan Hart and Kenan Thompson also expressed their sorrow and sent condolences to her family.

Michelle Trachtenberg leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable characters, youthful charisma, and an enduring spirit that lit up every screen she graced. She will be deeply missed.
