“The Power of Love”: A Final Farewell That Touched Millions

A woman’s final journey home became a moment the world will never forget, thanks to a stirring “ambulance serenade” that has brought millions to tears.

At the heart of this emotional farewell is Yvon Kanters, a compassionate caregiver and singer from the Netherlands. During the height of the 2020 pandemic, Yvon worked as a licensed social worker in a nursing home, offering support to those in need. With a voice that could stop anyone in their tracks, a colleague encouraged her to sing for patients with Parkinson’s and dementia—many of whom found solace in opera and music but suffered in silence from loneliness.

Yvon, singin a powerful version of "The Power of Love" for a patient's final journey home.

What began as a simple act of kindness soon grew into something extraordinary.

A Song for the Soul
Yvon recalled one powerful moment when she sang for an elderly man:
“He pointed at me and then at his tears, as if to say, ‘You’re singing for me’ and ‘You’re bringing me to tears.’”
In that moment, Yvon realized what she had always believed: music is a universal language. “Anyone can talk to us,” she said. Her viral performance led to a flood of requests from hospitals and nursing homes—each one hoping for a little music to lift the spirits of patients fighting serious illnesses like cancer and kidney disease.

The Last Trip Home
Then came a call that would lead to one of the most moving performances of all.

In a non-emergency ambulance equipped with a wheelchair-accessible bed, Yvon was invited to accompany a 26-year-old woman and her husband on her final journey home. After exhausting every available medical treatment, the young woman had chosen to spend her last days surrounded by love and peace. As they prepared for the ride, Yvon gently asked, “Is there a song you’d like to hear?”

The couple looked at each other. “The Power of Love,” they said—their song.

With the woman lying in the ambulance and her husband holding her hand, Yvon delivered a soul-stirring rendition of the ballad made famous by Jennifer Rush and later, Celine Dion. The moment was pure, raw, and filled with love. Though the woman was overcome with emotion and shed tears, she never spoke. Her expression said everything.

Later that day, Yvon visited the woman’s home to sing one last song—ABBA’s joyful “Dancing Queen”—a nod to the couple’s favorite band. It was a beautiful farewell that honored not just a life, but a love story.

A Global Reaction
Yvon shared the serenade on TikTok, and the response was overwhelming. Over four million people watched the heartfelt tribute. Comments poured in from around the world:
“I’m sobbing,” wrote one user.
“I wasn’t prepared for this level of emotion,” said another.
One person even suggested adding a “tissue warning” to the video.

Others praised the healing power of music in healthcare. One ambulance worker shared that they always ask patients if they have a favorite song during transfers—because music, they said, brings comfort when words no longer can.

Music and Meaning
Yvon grew up surrounded by music. Her father encouraged her and her sisters to rehearse and perform regularly, creating a bond through music that she now shares with patients during their most vulnerable moments.

This unforgettable serenade wasn’t just a song—it was a final gift, a bridge between life and death, love and goodbye. And for millions of people watching around the world, it was a powerful reminder that even in our darkest hours, the power of love can shine through.

Yesterday, I sang for a remarkable woman, an fighter full of life. She was being transported home by Nurse Anita and the mid-complex ambulance, a service for patients who need medical supervision but no emergency care. No sirens, but a journey filled with meaning. She loved all kinds of music, but when I asked if she had a special song with her husband, she didn’t hesitate: “The Power of Love.” As I sang, I saw tears well up in her eyes. A song that held so much more meaning than just words and melody. After this moment, we continued with a small, intimate living room concert.. one that will stay in my heart forever. Thank you, Nurse Anita, and thank you to this beautiful woman for sharing this moment with me.
