Anjelica Huston Breaks Her Silence: A Private Battle with Cancer and the Strength That Got Her Through
For decades, Anjelica Huston has been a pillar of grace and strength in Hollywood, captivating audiences with unforgettable roles in The Addams Family and The Witches. But behind her composed public image, the 73-year-old actress was fighting a deeply personal and private battle—one she’s only now ready to share.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Huston revealed for the first time that she was diagnosed with cancer shortly after completing John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum in 2019. For six years, she kept the diagnosis a closely guarded secret, choosing instead to face it with quiet courage and determination. Today, she’s proudly in remission and reflecting on the experience that forever changed her.
“It was a very serious moment for me,” Huston said from her peaceful home near the Sierra Nevada mountains. “I’ll always be proud of myself for getting through it.”
The experience, she admits, altered her outlook on life. “It made me aware of things I need to avoid, places I don’t belong,” she said. “People sometimes take life too seriously. Now, I try to keep things light. I don’t make a big fuss anymore.”
Though she’s now on the other side of her health battle, Huston has no plans to slow down. Her most recent role as Lady Tressilian in the limited series Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero, which premiered on April 16, was a meaningful one—not just professionally but personally. Filming in the English countryside stirred memories of her Irish childhood and the strong, horse-riding women she grew up around. “It was beautiful,” she recalled. “The women there reminded me of the women I knew back then.”
In fact, Huston especially relished playing Lady Tressilian—partly because many of her scenes were shot in bed. “It was a delight,” she laughed. And as for retirement? “I can’t imagine such a thing,” she said flatly. “I think it would be too much for me.”
Her enduring passion for her craft and her refusal to give up, even in the face of life’s toughest trials, is a testament to her resilience. When asked how she marked her fourth year of being cancer-free, her answer was simple and profound:
“I walked through my garden, smelled the roses, and thought how clever I was.”
Although she once hesitated to talk about her diagnosis, Huston now believes in the power of speaking up. “There’s something important in sharing your story,” she said. “In saying out loud that you made it through. Life is delicate and beautiful. And somehow, it makes you feel ready for whatever comes next.”
