In pursuit of the American dream, a young man left Germany, unaware that his journey would lead him not only to fame but also to the love of his life. That man was Eric Braeden, now one of the most recognizable faces in daytime television, best known for his iconic role as Victor Newman on The Young and the Restless.

Before he became a Hollywood legend, Braeden arrived in the United States with big dreams and just a few hundred dollars in his pocket. After high school, he left Germany with the hope of adventure and opportunity. As he sailed into New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty appeared at dawn, marking the beginning of a life-changing chapter.

Though his arrival was for a short promotional tour for The Riverbusters—a student documentary he co-created—he soon found himself alone in Los Angeles, with only $500 from Johnson Motors and a promise to stay behind. During those early days, he hustled to make ends meet: playing soccer for $10 a game, working as a busboy at La Scala, parking cars, and moving furniture.

But everything shifted when he enrolled at Santa Monica State College to study political science. It was there that he met Dale Russell, the woman who would become his lifelong partner. Educated, cultured, and well-read, Dale’s knowledge of European literature and her shared background with Eric sparked an instant connection. The couple tied the knot in 1966, long before fame found him.

Through the highs and lows, Dale has been by Eric’s side. More than just his wife, she’s been a steady source of support throughout his journey. Although she once dabbled in performing, she chose a quiet life away from the spotlight, building a career as an interior designer while encouraging her husband’s ambitions.

Braeden openly acknowledges Dale’s influence on his life and career. “People don’t realize how much Dale influences what I do or don’t do because she is so private,” he shared. “Her presence in my life has been consoling and uplifting.”

Their enduring love produced a son, Christian Gudegast, who is now a successful writer, director, and producer in his own right. Eric credits Dale with encouraging him to write his memoirs—something he had declined for years.

Reflecting on their decades-long marriage, Braeden once said, “Falling in love is the beginning. But to stay in love, you have to like the person. You need to respect them, enjoy their company, talk with them, and share life’s deepest moments.” For him, it’s not just about romantic passion—it’s about true companionship and admiration.

The couple also shares the joy of grandchildren. As of 2020, they had three. “I love them,” Eric said. “Seeing them makes me happier than anything else.”

Even after over 50 years of marriage and a storied career, Eric remains profoundly grateful—for his role, his fans, and most of all, for his family. “I’m incredibly appreciative of the wonderful coworkers I’ve had over the years and the tremendous support I’ve received from my wife and family,” he said.

That support became especially important in 2023. On April 21, Braeden, then 82, posted a candid 13-minute video from his home, revealing that he had been diagnosed with cancer. He had initially sought treatment for prostate issues, but further medical investigation uncovered high-grade cancer cells near his bladder.

He detailed his treatment plan, which included an UroLift and six weeks of immunotherapy. Despite his diagnosis, Braeden continued working on The Young and the Restless, crediting his medical team and the encouragement of his wife for helping him through it.

The actor also shared a remarkable twist: one of the doctors involved in his care had learned English by watching Braeden’s soap opera. This unique connection made the news even more profound.

Throughout his health scare, Eric remained calm and candid, encouraging other men—especially older ones—to listen to their bodies and get regular check-ups. “If you’ve seen me a little under the weather, well, I have been,” he admitted. “But I’ll soon be back to my best.”

Even after decades in Hollywood, Eric Braeden’s passion for his craft and love for his family hasn’t faded. When asked about retirement, he gave a clear answer: “Do I anticipate retiring anytime soon? No way!” His journey continues—with Dale by his side, just as she always has been.
