Brigitte Macron Grabs Emmanuel Macron’s Face on Airport Tarmac — Playful Moment or Public Spat?

French First Lady Brigitte Macron was caught on video grabbing her husband, President Emmanuel Macron, by the face as the couple prepared to step off their plane in Hanoi, Vietnam.

In the footage, a uniformed official opens the aircraft door as President Macron, dressed in a suit, stands in the entryway. Suddenly, two red sleeves reach out — belonging to Brigitte — and her hands cover the president’s mouth and jaw. Macron turns his head, seemingly caught off guard, but quickly realizes the cameras are rolling. He flashes a smile and waves before disappearing from view.

Moments later, the couple descended the stairs together. Macron offered his arm, but Brigitte, dressed in a red blazer, didn’t take it.

The clip, released by the Associated Press, quickly went viral. French newspaper Le Parisien ran the headline: “Slap or Squabble?” — igniting a flurry of speculation online.

Speaking to reporters, President Macron dismissed the idea of a spat, saying he and his wife were just play-fighting. The pair famously met when he was a teenage student and she was a married high school teacher. They wed in 2007, when Emmanuel was 29.

“We were squabbling and joking,” Macron said. “People are turning it into a geo-planetary catastrophe.”

The French president used the incident to comment on the power of social media and the dangers of disinformation, warning the public not to jump to conclusions.

Macron’s office also weighed in, explaining that the moment was simply a lighthearted one between husband and wife after a long flight. “They were decompressing with a bit of horseplay,” a spokesperson said. “Unfortunately, that’s all it took for conspiracy theories to start swirling.”

CNN was told the clip reflected a “moment of togetherness” — nothing more than playful teasing between two people who know each other well.
