Jessica Leonard entered the world as a healthy, happy baby—just like any other child. No one could have foreseen that, by the time she turned seven, she would become the heaviest child of her age, weighing an astonishing 200 kilograms. Her name spread across headlines—not for achievements, but for a heartbreaking reality that turned her childhood into a struggle.

Jessica’s mother, Caroline Shu Tug, remembers her daughter’s early years fondly. Jessica was cheerful and in good health. But over time, a troubling pattern emerged—Jessica never turned down food. Showered with love, and perhaps a bit too much indulgence, she was spoiled with fast food, sweets, chips, and other snacks in large quantities. Her family, unaware of the consequences, simply wanted to make her happy.

The family can’t pinpoint the exact moment things spiraled out of control. But alarm bells rang loud when, at just seven years old, Jessica tipped the scales at 220 kilograms and began having serious trouble breathing.

She was rushed to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in critical condition. That’s when child protective services stepped in.

Jessica’s story soon gained media attention, and she was featured in documentaries—sometimes treated more like a spectacle than a child in crisis. Desperate for help, her mother reached out, and thankfully, her cry was answered by professionals, including renowned nutritionists and dietitians.

As Jessica began treatment at a clinic, her mother was also enrolled in parenting classes to learn how to support her daughter’s recovery and make sustainable lifestyle changes at home.

Jessica’s relationship with food was deeply rooted in emotional dependence. At the clinic, she struggled to understand why the food she once received so freely was now being withheld. Her journey to recovery was anything but easy—it took months of dieting, physical activity, therapy, and sheer determination.

Eventually, Jessica made astonishing progress, losing over 140 kilograms. To complete her transformation, she underwent surgery to remove more than 10 kilograms of excess skin.

Today, Jessica is a different person—active, healthy, and thriving. She enjoys gymnastics and basketball, maintains a nutritious diet, and embraces a lifestyle full of energy and balance.
