When a kindhearted woman noticed a young mother and her little girl sharing pancakes at a restaurant, she quietly paid their bill and left a heartfelt message behind. Suzanne Maughan and her daughter Hayley were having breakfast at IHOP when an older woman took the seat beside them. “My sweet girl and I went out for breakfast this morning, and shortly after we sat down, a woman was placed right next to us,” Suzanne later shared in a post for Love What Matters.
The elderly woman seemed genuinely delighted watching Suzanne interact with her daughter, exchanging warm smiles with them throughout the meal. “She was sitting alone, but she kept glancing over at us, always smiling,” Suzanne wrote. When their food arrived, and Suzanne began cutting up Hayley’s pancakes, the woman leaned toward her and said, “You must have the best mom in the whole world. Never forget how wonderful she is.”
Soon, Suzanne learned the woman’s name was Mary—and that she herself had a daughter who was now 49 years old.
“She told me her daughter lives in Baltimore now,” Suzanne explained. “She introduced herself as Mary, and we told her our names too. We chatted briefly throughout the meal, but mostly she just watched the way Hayley and I interacted, smiling every time she looked over.”
Mary eventually left before Suzanne and Hayley finished eating. When Suzanne went to the cashier to pay, she discovered that Mary had already covered the bill.
“When we walked up to pay, Mary had already gone, but she’d left a note on the receipt that said, ‘Thank you for sharing your mother and daughter morning with me. —Mary.’”
Suzanne was moved to tears. “Mary doesn’t know that I’m a single mother of two. She doesn’t know how difficult this week has been for me. She has no idea about my worries, my doubts, or how hard I pray not to feel so alone. But God knew. And today, Mary listened to that little nudge and became our angel, reminding us how loved we truly are.”
“So thank you, Mary. Your small act of kindness made a huge difference in my day.”
Stories like Mary’s remind us that opportunities to be kind are everywhere—sometimes all it takes is a smile or a simple gesture to brighten someone’s day, just as she did for Suzanne and little Hayley.
