Jeff was having his birthday lunch when, out of the blue, he saw two people he knew.

Some of the most kind, brave, and selfless people in the world are men and women in the armed forces.

Joining is a brave choice in and of itself. That means they will be away from their family and friends for months or even years. And there is a real chance that you won’t come back.

All parents worry about this when their kids sign up.

But it also makes mom and dad proud that their child chose to serve their country. This makes reunions like the one you’ll see here extra sweet and emotional.

Jeff Grimm was turning 50, and all he wanted for his birthday was for his three kids to come home. Jeff wanted to be with his family because it had been two long years since they had all been together.

Shelby, his youngest daughter, was still in college while Dane and Drew, his older sons, were away in the marines and air force. Jeff’s dream about his birthday seemed like… a dream.

So, his wife Melanie helped make his wish come true.

The couple went out to lunch in Pewee Valley, Kentucky, for an early birthday celebration. Jeff sat next to his wife Melanie, who kept a recorder on him as they talked about donuts and the rainy weather.

Then, out of the blue, his two sons who were in the military came in to surprise him.

Jeff looks to his left, toward the door, and his jaw drops when he sees his 26-year-old son Dane and his 22-year-old brother Drew walk in with big smiles and their uniforms shining in the light.

At that point, Jeff looks down and lets his tears fall.

The father of three smiles and tries hard not to cry as he stands up to give his two sons a long-overdue hug.

Melanie, the mom, is 45 years old. She is trying so hard not to cry. She told Story Trender this:

“Jeff’s 50th birthday is on September 30, so I knew we had to do something big that he would remember for the rest of his life.”

She went on to say, “Dane had been away on several hard deployments, and Drew was stationed in Italy, so the boys hadn’t both been home at the same time in almost two years.”

Melanie and her boys had to plan and work hard to make it happen.
The mother of three said, “After a number of very stressful setbacks and weeks of thinking we wouldn’t be able to pull it off, we finally got the go-ahead for both boys to come home, and we could start planning the surprise.”

“After I picked up Drew, we had to sneak him into the house. He stayed in my daughter’s empty room.”

It’s hard to believe that the surprise didn’t get ruined. Their daughter Shelby couldn’t make it to the restaurant, but Melanie says that Shelby did surprise Jeff again by coming home.

The best birthday present is having family there.

This family must have had a great dinner at home. And they deserved it for sure!
