Lisa Wilson knew that her dad wouldn’t be at her wedding to dance with her.
David, her father, was in the hospital fighting a rare form of cancer. At the last minute, Lisa decided to cancel her elaborate wedding plans and marry her husband a week earlier at her father’s bedside instead.
The wedding at the UCI Medical Center wasn’t what she had dreamed of as a child, and it wasn’t what she had planned during her engagement.
But it was so important for her father to be there that she and her husband, Robert Pantoja, were willing to give up something.
Lisa and Robert got married by her dad’s side at the end of August 2014.
David died just 10 days after the ceremony.
But Lisa will always remember that David was there when she said “I do,” and she will never forget the dance she did with her dad.
“I said, ‘Daddy, I want to do my father-daughter dance with you,'” recalled Lisa. “He told me he couldn’t dance, and I told him, “You don’t have to. I want to dance in your hands.'”
And they did it to “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston.
“Rob, you’re the lucky one,” David Wilson told his daughter’s new husband. You won the drawing. You got my baby girl,” he said, and he said that the wedding at his bedside was “the best gift a daughter could give.”
