“Chuck Norris doesn’t read books. He stares them down until he gets the information he wants.” Most of us know him as a tough and merciless action movie hero. But very few people know about his mother, Wilma, who had to raise 3 sons alone and overcome many hardships in her life. So today, we would like to tell you the story of this remarkable family.
Chuck’s childhood was not easy, much like his mother’s.
Carlos Ray Norris, the real name of the actor, was born in 1940 and was the eldest of three brothers. According to Chuck, his childhood was bleak. They lacked money, and his mother’s health was not in the best condition. Chuck’s father was not an exemplary parent, leading Chuck to become introverted and struggle academically. Additionally, he lacked athleticism.
Wilma’s childhood was also difficult. Raised in poverty, she was given away as a ward of the state at the age of 8. She underwent treatment for a rare disease for two years, and after her recovery, the Great Depression began, exacerbating the struggle for survival for many.
When Chuck was 16, his father left the family, thrusting the eldest son into the role of head of the household. Chuck credits this experience with preparing him for the challenges he would face in the future. Despite the difficulties, Chuck’s mother served as a role model for him, demonstrating persistence and self-belief in the face of adversity. Despite enduring poverty and undergoing over 30 surgeries and cancer treatments, this resilient woman never let these hardships defeat her.
Chuck acknowledges his mother’s unwavering support throughout his life, noting that she prayed for him through all the ups and downs. From his precarious birth to his struggles in Hollywood, his mother’s prayers were a constant source of strength and guidance for him.
The primary lesson Wilma imparted to her children was the importance of self-belief and determination. She instilled in them the belief that they could achieve anything in life, despite the obstacles they might face. Wilma taught her children that with unwavering determination and self-confidence, they could overcome any challenge that life presented to them.
She had a deep understanding of the power of self-belief, and this guidance profoundly influenced Chuck’s mindset, enabling him to pave his path to success. Following his military service,
Chuck embarked on a prosperous journey in martial arts, initially instructing at various schools. Notably, he counted actor Steve McQueen and Priscilla Presley among his clientele. Transitioning to karate tournaments, Chuck faced early defeats but quickly evolved into an unstoppable force, clinching numerous championships and retiring unbeaten after a decade of professional fighting.
His remarkable skills caught the attention of filmmakers, leading to opportunities in cinema. During his time in the industry, Chuck crossed paths with Bruce Lee, forming a lasting friendship. Eventually, Bruce extended an offer for Chuck to feature in his legendary film “Way of the Dragon.”
Following his breakthrough in the film industry, Chuck diversified his pursuits, echoing the resilience instilled by his mother. Beyond his acting career, he ventured into writing, with several of his books achieving bestseller status, spanning topics from martial arts to philosophy and literature. Additionally, he actively engages in charitable endeavors, embodying the values imparted by Wilma.
Throughout their lives, Chuck and Wilma provided unwavering support to each other. Despite enduring another tragedy in the 1970s with the passing of Chuck’s brother, Wieland, and Wilma’s recurrent illnesses, Chuck remained steadfastly by her side. His dedication reached its peak when he cared for her around the clock during her battle with arthritis:
“My whole life right now is about keeping her alive,” Chuck Norris once declared, epitomizing the depth of his devotion to his mother. Despite his numerous marriages, Chuck found lasting happiness with model Gena O’Kelley, a union spanning nearly 24 years. He attributes this blessing to his mother’s prayers, acknowledging her pivotal role in his life.
As Wilma celebrated her 101st birthday, Chuck continued to express his gratitude for her unwavering support. Reflecting on their bond, Chuck shared a poignant moment from her 100th birthday, recounting their conversation:
“I can’t believe it, and neither can my mom. She turns 101 years young this week on May 4. Wow! I looked at her a few days ago and said, ‘You’re a centenarian!’ She replied in jest, ‘I’m not a centipede!’” Chuck Norris once shared, highlighting his mother’s delightful sense of humor.
As Wilma celebrated her 101st birthday, Chuck expressed his love and appreciation for her yet again. “Happy Birthday, mom! 101 years young! Wow! There are no words to describe how much I love and appreciate you. Thank you for everything you have done for us over the many years we stay together,” he declared, reaffirming the profound bond they share.
