The 84-year-old actress is seen in a wheelchair for her role in the film, titled “The Life Before Us.”
Filming in Bari, Italy, she appeared in a crimson dress adorned with a gold floral pattern, along with a red scarf or shawl covering her. Her appearance was markedly different from her usual, with messy hair.
Large crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of the star in action in the new movie, directed by her son, Edoardo Ponti.
In this adaptation of Romain Gary’s novel, Loren portrays a woman who cares for the children of prostitutes.
Reportedly, she will film additional sequences over the next month at the Pane e Pomodoro beach and on the San Nicola pier, with production expected to conclude in August.
While she directed a one-woman short film titled “La Voce Umana” in 2014, this will mark Loren’s first on-screen appearance since lending her voice to a character in “Cars 2” for non-English speaking countries.
Loren, a Hollywood icon from the Golden Age, began her cinematic journey in 1950 at the age of 16. Her career soared after signing a five-picture contract with Paramount in 1956, leading to roles in films such as “The Pride and the Passion,” “Houseboat,” and “It Started in Naples.”
In 1962, she made history as the first actress to win an Oscar for a foreign-language performance, thanks to her role in “Two Women.”
Additionally, she boasts a Grammy Award, five prestigious Golden Globes, and a BAFTA, along with honors from both the Venice and Cannes Film Festivals.
In a 2016 interview with W magazine, she reflected on aging in Hollywood, expressing, “You are always surprised. Honestly, I didn’t think I’d live to be 80 when I was 20, but here I am.” She continued, “You think, ‘My god, all this time went by? I just can’t believe it.'”
