Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, Shannen openly shared her health struggles. She often spoke about her dog Bowie, who seemed to sense her illness before her diagnosis. Throughout her treatment, Bowie was described as “crazy protective.”

In a November 2023 interview, Shannen reflected on her upbringing and the lessons learned from her mother’s experience. Despite her ongoing health challenges, Shannen focused on not burdening her mother with additional responsibilities.
