The modeling and fashion industry has evolved significantly over the years, with inclusivity and representation becoming more prominent on runways and magazine covers. One model who has captured global attention for her distinctive and extraordinary skin tone is Nyakim Gatwech.

Nyakim Gatwech, born on January 27, 1993, in Gambela, Ethiopia, is an American model of Sudanese descent. Her family faced many challenges, including displacement due to the South Sudan Civil War, which led them to live in a refugee camp in Kenya until Nyakim was 14. They then immigrated to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the United States.

Growing up, Nyakim’s dark skin often drew unwanted attention and ridicule, both in Kenya and later in the United States. She was frequently called the “ugly duckling” and faced pressure to lighten her skin. Despite her sister’s attempt to help her do so, Nyakim chose to embrace her natural appearance, a decision that took time but ultimately empowered her.

Her entry into the fashion world began when a designer friend invited her to model their creations. This opportunity led to further modeling gigs, including a role in the thriller ‘Saw’ in 2017. Since then, Nyakim has gained recognition through various advertising campaigns, magazine covers, and runway shows.

Today, Nyakim works with several clothing and cosmetics brands and has amassed a following of 976,000 on Instagram. Her popularity continues to grow as more people learn about her.

An interesting anecdote from Nyakim’s life involves a taxi driver who once offered her $10,000 to change her skin tone. Nyakim declined, affirming that despite the challenges, she would not trade her unique identity for an easier path.

Although she has not returned to Ethiopia, Nyakim honors her heritage by frequently wearing outfits adorned with Ethiopian ornaments, celebrating her African roots.
