Macaulay Culkin Describes 'Complicated Relationship' with Father's Day

Culkin credits Song for helping him reframe his perspective on Father’s Day, a holiday he previously found difficult due to his strained relationship with his own father, Christopher “Kit” Culkin.

“If you know a bit about me, you’d know that Father’s Day has been complicated for me in the past,” Culkin wrote on Instagram.

He explained that his relationship with his father was challenging, which led him to “reinvent the wheel” when he started his own family with Song, now 36. “Aside from getting an extra hour or two of sleep, I try to make the day more about celebrating my boys than myself,” Culkin, 43, shared. “After all, they’re the reason I’m a father (no offense to Brenda),” he added.

In his post, he also mentioned that while Father’s Day isn’t as significant as birthdays or Christmas in their household, it ranks higher than holidays like St. Patrick’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and the 4th of July. He shared that he likes to do something fun with his boys on Father’s Day, making it a special occasion.

“Father’s Day isn’t for me,” he continued, “it’s for the people who make me feel like a father.”

Culkin has been open about his troubled relationship with his father during his childhood. In earlier interviews, he has talked about how his father, who was also his manager, placed immense pressure on him as his career took off.

“I was making who-knows-how-much money, and Kit made me sleep on the couch just because he could,” Culkin shared in a 2001 interview. “It was his way of showing who was in charge.”

In a 2018 interview with Marc Maron, Culkin revealed that his father had been abusive even before he became famous. He described how his father mistreated him “physically and mentally,” especially as his father grew resentful of his success.

“He was jealous,” Culkin explained. “Everything he tried to do, I excelled at before I was 10.”

At the age of sixteen, Culkin famously emancipated himself from his parents and filed a lawsuit to take control of his $17 million fortune. A Manhattan Supreme Court judge later placed his finances under the care of his family’s former attorney, Billy Breitner, until Culkin turned eighteen.

Brenda Song says Macaulay Culkin helps boost her beauty confidence

Culkin and Song began their relationship in 2018 and welcomed their first son, Dakota, in 2021. The couple had a second son in 2022, though they have kept his name private.

When asked if he wanted children, Culkin told Joe Rogan in a 2018 podcast, “I’m going to make some babies.” He added, “This one’s a good one, so I’m probably going to put some babies in her soon. We’ve definitely been practicing.”

In a December interview after receiving his Hollywood Walk of Fame plaque, Culkin said that having his children present was “the whole reason to do this.”

“It’s the reason for pretty much everything now,” he said. “We always talk about how we don’t remember our life before our kids—it feels like a dream or a distant concept, not a reality. I love that my boys can see a dog pee on my name here.”

Culkin also expressed his deep love for Song. During his Walk of Fame speech, he said, “Lastly, but not least, I’d like to thank Brenda. You are absolutely everything. You’re my champion. You’re the only person happier for me today than I am.”

“You’re not just the best woman I’ve ever known; you’re the best person I’ve ever known,” he continued. “You’ve given me all my purpose and a family. After the birth of our two boys, you’ve become my three favorite people. I love you so much.”
