Colin Farrell has long kept his personal life private, especially concerning his son, James, who was born with a rare genetic disorder. Recently, Farrell has begun to share more about his family’s journey and the newly established Colin Farrell Foundation, aimed at supporting research and aid for those with similar conditions. This newfound openness underscores his deep commitment to his family and the cause he passionately supports.
At Farrell’s Los Angeles home, there’s a lively atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the typical Hollywood scene. Surrounded by photographers and video crews, the 48-year-old actor closely watches his 20-year-old son, James, as he plays catch with his caregiver in the backyard.
Farrell is the father of two boys: James and Henry. James’s mother is model Kim Bordenave, but their relationship was short-lived. Despite their separation, Farrell remains devoted to providing for James’s needs.
James, born in 2003, has Angelman syndrome, a rare neurogenetic disorder. In early 2021, Farrell and Bordenave sought conservatorship for their son, detailing in legal documents that James requires daily assistance with tasks such as meal preparation and dressing, with his parents overseeing his health and well-being.
Although James is nonverbal, his expressive eyes convey much. When he notices a journalist, he playfully throws a miniature basketball her way, revealing his infectious joy. Farrell’s pride in his son is evident as he observes these interactions.
“I want the world to be kind to James,” Farrell expresses sincerely. “I want him to be treated with kindness and respect.”
To address the needs of individuals like James, Farrell is launching the Colin Farrell Foundation. The foundation will focus on advocacy, education, and creating innovative programs to support adults with intellectual disabilities.
“This is the first time I’m speaking about it, and the only reason I’m speaking is because I can’t ask James if he wants to do this,” Farrell explains, his voice reflecting both determination and paternal concern.
Farrell interacts with James as if he has perfect fluency and cognitive ability, despite the communication challenges posed by Angelman syndrome. “I speak to James as if he understands everything perfectly. I have to make decisions based on knowing James’s spirit and the goodness in his heart.”
Farrell reflects on James’s progress with pride. “He’s worked so hard all his life. When he first started feeding himself, it was messy, but now he does it beautifully. I’m proud of him every day because I think he’s magic.”
The foundation has been a long-held aspiration for Farrell. “For years, I’ve wanted to create greater opportunities for families with children with special needs to receive the support they deserve,” he says. “James and those like him deserve a greater degree of individuality, autonomy, and community.”
Farrell’s initiative has garnered significant support, highlighting the influential role celebrities can play in raising awareness and encouraging support for important causes.
