Leonard Cohen’s 1984 song “Hallelujah” has become an anthem embraced by people of all ages and backgrounds. Cohen himself once said, “many different hallelujahs exist,” reflecting the song’s exploration of finding faith in life. This sentiment is captured in the various interpretations of the song—some somber, others hopeful. One such remarkable rendition is performed by 13-year-old Fionn Wheelan.

Wheelan teamed up with 18-year-old busker Allie Sherlock on the streets of Ireland for this cover. Sherlock, who has toured with artists like One Republic, enjoys returning to his roots by performing for passersby. Recognizing Wheelan’s potential, Sherlock dubbed him “the next Ed Sheeran,” a comparison that goes beyond their shared red hair, as Wheelan’s soulful singing rivals that of the famous British artist.

While “Hallelujah” is widely recognized today, it wasn’t always a hit. It gained popularity after John Cale recorded a new version in 1991, followed by Jeff Buckley’s renowned rendition in 1994. The song reached international fame in 2001 when it was featured in the soundtrack of the film Shrek. Cohen once remarked, “This world is filled with conflicts and unresolvable issues. But sometimes we can reconcile and enjoy the chaos—‘Hallelujah.’”

Only time will tell if Wheelan will achieve the success of the legends who have inspired him. In the meantime, you can follow him on Instagram to enjoy more of his covers, and be sure to check out Sherlock’s YouTube page for more great music.
