Authorities in Tampa, Florida, attempted to assist a man, known on TikTok as “Lieutenant Dan,” before the arrival of Hurricane Milton. Despite their efforts, the man, whose real name is reportedly Joseph Malinowski, refused to leave his 20-foot boat, opting to ride out the storm.
Terrence Concannon, who posted the viral TikTok on October 8, captured Malinowski explaining his decision. In the video, Malinowski, named after the character from Forrest Gump, confidently expresses his faith in God, saying, “God instructed me to come out here and get a boat… He has my back. We’re going to ride this out.” When asked if he would be wearing a life jacket, he boldly replied, “Hell no,” insisting that his boat was the safest place he could be.
As of October 9, the video had gained around 43 million views, sparking both local and national attention. Tampa authorities were concerned for his safety, and despite several attempts to convince him to evacuate, Malinowski remained steadfast in his decision. Local police stated that while they offered assistance, the worsening storm conditions would eventually prevent them from being able to reach him.
At a press conference, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor initially stated that Malinowski had been rescued and taken to a shelter. However, this was quickly contradicted by NewsNation reporter Brian Entin, who posted a photo of Malinowski still aboard his boat, proving he had not left. The mayor’s office later confirmed that Malinowski had agreed to leave at one point but ultimately stayed.
Concannon, who first shared the viral video, started a GoFundMe campaign for Malinowski, raising approximately $23,000. The funds are intended to help Malinowski, described as a “modern-day pirate,” purchase a new boat since his current one has “seen better days.”
As of October 9, Hurricane Milton, a Category 3 storm, was expected to make landfall on Florida’s west-central coast with sustained winds of 120 mph. Despite repeated warnings for residents to evacuate, Malinowski chose to remain aboard his vessel, trusting in his faith and the safety of his boat.
