Since beginning his career as a vocalist in 1961, Rod Stewart has been a prominent figure in the entertainment industry for decades. Over the years, he has delighted fans worldwide by releasing numerous albums and performing at an array of venues across the globe.
However, as time has passed, Stewart’s greatest challenge has become his health. His battle with various medical conditions has left fans concerned about whether he will continue his thriving career or step back to focus on his well-being.
In 2019, the British rocker attended a fundraiser in England for the Prostate Project and the European Tour Foundation. During the event, Stewart surprised attendees with a deeply personal announcement: he had been battling prostate cancer for the past three years. Diagnosed during a routine check-up in 2016, Stewart shared that early detection and consistent testing had allowed him to make a full recovery. He encouraged men to undergo regular screenings, emphasizing how early detection can significantly improve survival rates.
Despite overcoming prostate cancer, Stewart faced other health challenges. In March 2023, he announced on Instagram that he had to cancel his performance at “A Day On The Green” in Australia with Cyndi Lauper and Jon Stevens due to an “infection.” Fans expressed their concern over his well-being following the cancellation.
Stewart also revealed a past struggle with thyroid cancer in 2000, which nearly cost him his voice. In an interview with ABC, he recalled the shock of his diagnosis, explaining how it left him speechless for days. At the time, Stewart was in excellent physical shape, regularly exercising and performing. His active lifestyle made the diagnosis even more surprising. Reflecting on the period, he wrote for the Daily Mail, “I was as fit as a butcher’s dog—working out every day, doing shows, and still playing weekend football.”
In June 2023, concerns about Stewart’s health resurfaced when the Daily Mail reported that his children were urging him to retire and focus on family life, particularly after the birth of his third grandson. However, Stewart quickly addressed these rumors on Instagram, declaring, “I shall never retire!” He emphasized his dedication to singing, stating it’s what he was “put on this earth” to do.
Looking ahead, Stewart appears eager to explore new musical horizons. In an interview with People magazine in June 2023, he announced plans to transition from rock ‘n’ roll to swing music and the “Great American Songbook,” marking a new chapter in his career. Although he intends to step back from major tours, he reassured fans that he would occasionally revisit his classic rock hits.
As he prepared for his latest tour, Stewart shared insights into maintaining his vocal health, explaining that a few hours of singing before shows is sufficient. He also continues to prioritize fitness, engaging in swimming and working out at least four times a week to stay in peak condition.
Despite health setbacks and evolving priorities, Rod Stewart’s passion for music and performance remains unwavering, and he’s determined to keep entertaining audiences for as long as he can.
