Claudia Hankin was enjoying a peaceful evening on her porch, engrossed in a good book, when she noticed a cute cat nearby. Since stray cats often linger around her home, she didn’t think much of it.

However, Hankin wasn’t wearing her glasses while reading, so the feline figure she had been cooing at appeared slightly blurry. When she put them back on for a clearer look, she was in for a surprise—her “new friend” wasn’t a cat at all!

Realizing what she had mistaken for a friendly feline, Claudia quickly grabbed her phone to snap a few pictures. But as soon as the camera flash went off, her unexpected guest—a possum—scurried away into the night.

How did she react to her surprise visitor? “I wasn’t actually scared at all, as possums are harmless and very sweet, helpful neighbors,” she shared.

Still, she admitted, “I would have been mightily startled if I’d realized it was a wild animal WHILE I was petting it.” Fortunately, that awkward moment was avoided!

Despite the initial shock, Hankin appreciated the encounter. And who knows? Now that the possum knows it’s welcome, it just might return for another late-night visit—this time, with its true identity out in the open.
