A grandmother recently faced a difficult choice: take a much-needed vacation or provide full-time childcare for her grandson. Her daughter, a struggling single mother, saw her refusal as unfair, not realizing how much her mother had already sacrificed.
In a heartfelt post shared on the “AITA” subreddit on September 16, 2023, a 56-year-old woman opened up about her experience. She had spent years supporting her daughter, who became a single mom after her baby’s father left when the child was just three months old. The daughter moved back in with her mother to get back on her feet, and the grandmother did her best to juggle her job, personal life, and caregiving duties.

Despite a busy schedule, the grandmother routinely cared for her grandson each evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. after finishing her own workday at 5. She also covered the household bills, while her daughter paid for the baby’s essentials like diapers and daycare. Her goal was to save for her own future while still helping her daughter find independence.
But tensions rose when the grandmother decided to take a month off work—not to travel, but simply to rest and recharge. Her daughter saw it as the perfect opportunity to cut childcare costs by pulling her son from daycare and having her mother look after him instead.

The grandmother, however, declined. “I immediately said no, as it is my rest and taking care of a child for 6 hours a day, five days a week, plus two hours at night, is not in my plans,” she explained. Still, she tried to compromise by offering to babysit in the mornings, as long as the child remained in daycare during the afternoons.
Her daughter, feeling overwhelmed, pleaded with her mother to extend the babysitting hours by an additional three per day. While the grandmother empathized with her daughter’s challenges and deeply loved her grandson, she stood her ground. She didn’t believe caring for a 14-month-old would be a restful experience and felt strongly about protecting her time to recuperate.
Public reaction online was largely in support of the grandmother. Many users believed that asking her to sacrifice her only break for extended childcare was unfair. While they acknowledged the daughter’s struggles, they also pointed out that going without daycare for a single month wouldn’t significantly impact her finances.
So, was the grandmother wrong for choosing rest over babysitting? Or was she right to set boundaries for her own well-being?
What would you do in her shoes?
