She Was Called the “Golden Girl of the Midwest”—But a Tragic Accident Changed Her Face Forever

In the 1970s, Sydne Rome was poised to become Hollywood’s next blonde bombshell. With dazzling blue eyes, golden hair, and undeniable screen presence, she had all the makings of a global star. But unlike Marilyn Monroe or Brigitte Bardot, Sydne’s rise took a very different path—one that led her far from Hollywood’s spotlight.

Born in Akron, Ohio, in 1951, Rome came from a modest, upper-middle-class background. No showbiz parents. No industry connections. Just raw ambition. While others chased fame in L.A., Sydne took a leap of faith and headed to Europe, where her beauty and charm captivated Italian and French filmmakers. Her early career was marked by low-budget films and bold choices, including turning down roles that demanded nudity—something she wasn’t comfortable with at the time.

Though her Hollywood breakthrough never truly came, Sydne became a familiar face in European cinema. She even acted alongside the legendary David Bowie in Just a Gigolo—and later revealed they dated during that time. “He was delicious and quite amusing,” she once said of the music icon.

But behind the glamour, there were struggles. Rome candidly spoke about feeling like a product in the entertainment world, and the pressure actresses face to look and act a certain way. “Actresses aren’t supposed to be intelligent,” she once lamented.

Still, Sydne forged her own path. She married twice, eventually adopting two daughters from the favelas of Brazil with her second husband, Dr. Roberto Bernabei—who would later become Pope Francis’ personal doctor.

Then, tragedy struck.

In 2009, Sydne was driving her daughter when her car veered off the road and slammed into a tree. The airbag exploded against her face, leaving her with permanent facial paralysis on one side. At first, doctors didn’t notice the extent of the damage. “After a while, that part of my face became paralyzed,” she said. “I had physical therapy… and I feel a little better today.”

The change was dramatic. “I know it’s me,” she shared, “but it’s like seeing someone else.”

Yet through it all, Sydne Rome never stopped acting. She starred in the 2023 Italian film La Quattordicesima Domenica Del Tempo Ordinario and appeared in over 50 episodes of the popular series Don Matteo between 2021 and 2022.

Now in her 70s, she continues to live a life filled with meaning, creativity, and resilience. She may not have become the next Bardot—but Sydne Rome is proof that true beauty shines from within, even when life leaves its scars.
