What began as an ordinary Friday turned into a once-in-a-lifetime experience for boat captain Jennifer Dowker of Cheboygan, Michigan. Jennifer, who runs Nautical North Family Adventures, was carrying out routine maintenance when something unexpected happened.

While scrubbing the windows of her glass-bottom boat, the “Yankee Sunshine,” Jennifer noticed a shiny object on the riverbed. Intrigued, she decided to pause and investigate what had caught her eye.

“I saw this green bottle resting atop a fish bed and thought, ‘That looks interesting,’” Jennifer recalled. “So I reached down, picked it up, and noticed there was a piece of paper inside. Right then, I thought, ‘This is amazing.’”

Inside the bottle, Jennifer discovered a handwritten note that had gone unseen for nearly a century. Dated 1926, the message read: “Will the person who finds this bottle give this paper to George Morrow, Cheboygan Michigan.”

Thrilled by her find, Jennifer shared the story on Facebook. As her post gained traction, so did the likelihood of locating George or a relative who might recognize the name.

Thanks to the power of the internet, George’s daughter, Michelle Primo, was soon identified. She quickly contacted Jennifer to confirm the discovery.

Although the revelation came as a huge surprise, Michelle realized it was perfectly in character for her late father.

“He used to do little things like that,” she said. “When we were finishing our basement, he slipped a note behind the paneling. The bottle was dated November 26, and his birthday was in November, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he dropped it in the water as part of his own celebration.”

Jennifer and Michelle later connected via video chat to talk about their shared experience. Michelle plans to visit Cheboygan in September to see her father’s note in person but chose to leave the message with Jennifer rather than take it home.
