Betrayal cuts deepest when it comes from the ones we love most. That’s exactly what Josie felt when her own son lied to her, leaving her heartbroken and unsure of what to do next.

Josie had always been a devoted mother. Wanting to give her newlywed son and his wife the best start in life, she made a selfless decision—she handed over her three-bedroom home so they could begin building their family in comfort. She moved in with her widowed sister, believing she was helping create a happy future for her son.

But what unfolded was nothing like she imagined.

Recently, her son announced that his mother-in-law would also be moving into the house. Shocked, Josie protested: “I didn’t leave my home so that she could live there.”

Her daughter-in-law then admitted something that shattered Josie’s trust. “We lied about starting a family right away. We’re not ready yet—we’re too young. But my mother is alone, and since we now have a bigger house, she’ll live with us.”

Josie was stunned. She had given up her home believing it was to support her son and his new family. Instead, her generosity was being used for someone else’s benefit. When she objected, her son’s words cut even deeper: “My mother-in-law needs us more than you do. She’s family now, and I’m responsible for her.”

Now, Josie feels deceived, betrayed, and heartbroken. She wonders if her sacrifice has been taken for granted and asks: what should I do?
