“So I’m 35, and 9 months ago I had a very messy and painful breakup with my fiancé. I ended up moving in with a friend and her husband, sharing a house we’re all renting together.”

That’s when she met her neighbor, Kevin. He offered to help them move in, and from the first moment she saw him, she was drawn to him. Living on the outskirts of a big city meant they shared the same bus commute every day, and with each trip, their connection grew stronger.

“I knew Kevin had a wife and children,” she admitted. His love for them was obvious—he talked about them openly, showed her photos, and even kept family pictures on his phone. But what began as a harmless crush slowly deepened into something more. Kevin was funny, sweet, and attentive in a way her ex had never been.

She recalls one morning: Kevin spent the entire bus ride on the phone with his daughter, gently reassuring her before a school presentation. “It was so easy to imagine being with someone like him,” she confessed. “Someone who cared about everyone around him.”

The woman couldn’t help but compare Kevin’s warm, playful personality to his wife, whom she also knew from school. “They seemed like opposites,” she said. “He’s funny and charming, she’s dry and reserved. I couldn’t understand how they even worked as a couple. It made me think he was stuck in a marriage that didn’t suit him.”

One evening, Kevin showed up at her door, visibly worried. His wife had been hospitalized in another city, and with no nearby relatives, he asked her to watch his three daughters until a family friend could arrive later that night.

She agreed immediately, but the experience quickly turned into a nightmare.

The eldest, a moody preteen, was openly disrespectful—ignoring her, talking back, and muttering insults under her breath.

The middle child was boisterous, craving loud, messy games despite being told no.

The youngest was quiet but easily swept up into her sisters’ chaos.

“At one point, we played hide-and-seek, and the girls locked me out of the house. The oldest just sat there with her headphones on while I begged her to let me back in. Thankfully, Kevin’s family friend arrived a few minutes later and let me inside. I was humiliated.”

The experience left her shaken. For months, she had daydreamed about being Kevin’s partner, even imagining herself as a stepmother to his children. But after that night, the fantasy shattered.

“Now I want nothing to do with those kids,” she admitted. “It just made me believe even more that Kevin and his wife are unhappy, because kids from a happy home don’t behave like that. Still, I love him. I know we could have a wonderful relationship, but the situation with his children makes me question if it’s even possible. Their mother could easily turn them against me.”

Caught between her feelings for Kevin and the harsh reality of his family life, she confessed that she feels isolated. “I wish I could talk to someone about this, but I know everyone in my life would just criticize me.”
