We recently hosted a dinner for my in-laws and my 29-year-old single brother-in-law. The evening started off wonderfully—my mother-in-law even praised me for organizing such a lovely family gathering. Everything seemed fine until I accidentally overheard a private conversation between my mother-in-law and my husband. To my shock, she said, “You should tell your wife not to wear such revealing clothes around your brother. He’s single, and it’s inappropriate for her to show so much skin.”
I was angry, but I stayed composed and carried on as if nothing had happened. I believe I have every right to wear whatever I want in my own home. I was simply wearing a skirt and a tank top; my body shape isn’t something I should be blamed for.
After everyone left, I spoke to my husband and told him that, based on what I’d overheard, I no longer felt comfortable having his mother in our home. I made it clear that I am an adult and will not be controlled or dictated to by anyone.
What do you think of how I handled this situation?
