My 16-year-old stepson recently asked if he could bring his new girlfriend along on our family holiday to Spain. My husband agreed—but then informed me that we could only afford four tickets, which meant my 18-year-old daughter would have to stay behind.

I was stunned and deeply hurt. I told him I couldn’t understand how he could prioritize a girl we barely know over my own daughter, whom he has helped raise since she was seven years old.

His reply shocked me: “That stranger is my son’s guest. Besides, your daughter’s father has always been negligent—he’s never paid for her vacations. Maybe it’s time he stepped up.”

I felt cornered. I knew my daughter’s biological father couldn’t afford a trip to Europe, but I also felt powerless to change my husband’s decision. In the end, we went to Spain without her.

When we came home, my world shattered even more. My daughter had packed up her things and moved in with her father. She told me she blames me for not standing up for her when she needed me most.

Now I’m devastated. I can’t believe my husband was so cruel, and I’m heartbroken that his choice—and my silence—drove my daughter away. I feel like I’ve lost her trust, and I don’t know how to repair the damage.
