The thought of my house catching fire is one of my biggest fears.

That’s why I always keep fresh batteries in my smoke alarms and unplug chargers before bed. But a warning out of Kentucky from Jason Whitaker revealed a danger I had never even considered.

Back in the fall of 2019, Jason nearly lost his home to a fire. For weeks he had noticed a strange odor, which he suspected might be an electrical issue. According to Fox10, it took him some time before he discovered the real culprit: a spiral lightbulb.

A shocking discovery
When Jason inspected the bulb, he realized insects—ladybugs—had crawled into the spirals and settled there over several years. Their presence combined with the heat from the bulb created a serious fire risk.

He later shared photos on Facebook with a blunt warning:
“These light bulbs will burn your house down. Check yours, please.”

Others report the same
Jason’s post went viral, with more than 430,000 shares. Homeowners chimed in, saying they had found similar problems when moving into new houses.

Spiral bulbs provide both light and warmth, which naturally attract insects. Left unchecked, this combination can become a hidden fire hazard.

A simple precaution
The point isn’t to spark fear but to raise awareness. A quick check of your light fixtures could prevent disaster. Replacing old spiral bulbs—or at least inspecting them regularly—takes only minutes and could save lives.

Stay safe, keep an eye on your lightbulbs, and share this information with others. A small precaution today might prevent a catastrophe tomorrow.
