I needed to run a few errands, so I asked my mother-in-law to watch my baby for a couple of hours. She seemed thrilled about it, and I thought it would be a nice chance for them to bond. But when I got back, I was completely shocked by what I found.
My little one, who had only just learned to sit up, was on the floor holding a cleaning rag. My MIL was guiding her tiny hands back and forth, making her wipe the floor as though she were cleaning. My baby looked confused and upset, clearly not understanding what was happening.
I rushed over, scooped her up immediately, and checked to be sure she was unharmed. Thankfully she was fine physically, but the whole scene was deeply unsettling. My MIL acted like it was nothing. “I figured it was easier than doing it myself,” she said casually, as though that excused it. From that moment on, I decided she couldn’t be left alone with my daughter. I simply couldn’t trust someone who would treat my infant that way, no matter her intentions.
