Christie and Alex had been married for over a decade, yet they never had children. During those years, both of them poured themselves into their careers, and slowly, without realizing it, they drifted apart.

They kept their old traditions—like going to a small diner every Valentine’s Day and anniversary—but those outings became routine instead of romantic. Christie longed for something more.

Her lifelong dream was to travel the world, explore different cultures, and create meaningful memories. Since they didn’t have children, she saw these adventures as a chance to rebuild their closeness. But Alex always turned her down, insisting they needed to save money for retirement. Over time, Christie felt her life fading into a dull loop of work and sleep, and the spark in their marriage dimmed.

One day everything changed. Alex was diagnosed with a rare cancer, and the news hit Christie hard. She was struggling with her fading feelings while also realizing that her husband’s time was suddenly limited.

Then, on her way home from work, Christie received a call from the hospital. The nurse’s voice was grave:
“Mrs. Carson, your husband’s condition has worsened. You should come right away.”

Panicked, Christie rushed to the hospital. She felt crushed under the weight of everything left unsaid between them.
When she arrived, Alex was barely able to speak, but he tried to express what had been in his heart.

“Christie… I know I didn’t always show it, but I loved you more than anything. I realized, at some point, that maybe you didn’t feel the same anymore,” he whispered.

His weak breaths couldn’t hide the sorrow behind his words. Tears filled Christie’s eyes as he continued:
“I didn’t expect to leave so soon. I had so many hopes for us. These are my last hours, and I want to spend them with you. And when I’m gone… I want to take something of yours with me. Please place something that belongs to you in my pocket at the funeral, so I can hold onto it forever.”

Christie, overwhelmed, nodded through her tears.
“I promise, Alex. Don’t worry about me. Rest now… I’ll be okay, and I know you’ll be watching over me.”

They spent their final hours listening to music, remembering happier moments, and simply sitting together. As night settled in, Alex closed his eyes—and didn’t open them again.

At the funeral, Christie gently placed her locket inside Alex’s coat pocket as she’d promised. But she also discovered a handwritten letter tucked inside his pocket.

In his note, Alex wrote:

“I have loved you all my life, and I’m grateful that you were the one I spent my years with. In trying to prove my love, I forgot to live in the present with you, and somewhere along the way, we grew apart.
I remember your dream of owning a café by the ocean, serving your cakes and warm meals. I never forgot. It became my motivation every day. I’m sorry I neglected you while working so hard to make it possible.
In my safe, you’ll find a bank passbook in your name with the savings I set aside for your café. There is also an envelope with the documents for a small seaside cottage and the land where your café can stand. I wanted to open it together, but life had other plans.
Please build it anyway. I’ll be with you in spirit.
I love you endlessly. —Alex”

Christie was deeply moved and wished she could rewind time. She prayed, talked to Alex in her quiet moments, and slowly gained the strength to continue living.

In honor of her husband and his devotion, she opened “Uncle Alex’s Seaside Café.”

Not only did it fulfill her dream, but it also became a tribute to a love that endured—even through distance, regret, and loss.
