At Don Lugo High School in California, school resource officer Ryan Tillman found a truly unforgettable way to say goodbye to the students he had grown close to.
After being promoted to Chino Police Corporal, Tillman prepared to leave the school where he had built strong connections with both staff and pupils. Instead of a typical emotional farewell, he decided to make his exit something the students would always remember.
During a school assembly, Officer Tillman teamed up with the principal and the dance team to surprise everyone with a special performance.
Speaking to NBC Los Angeles, he explained his idea simply:
“I thought dancing would be a great way to make a big exit.”
As the assembly began, the atmosphere quickly shifted when Tillman joined the students on stage. When Lil Mama’s “Lip Gloss” started playing, the crowd erupted in excitement.
Though it’s not every day you see a police officer dancing in front of a high school crowd, Tillman showed he had plenty of rhythm—and confidence. The students cheered as he kept up with the routine, fully engaging with the performance.
Another school resource officer praised his effort, noting how uncommon it is for SROs to take such a bold step in front of students and staff, and highlighting the importance of building trust with young people.
The surprise didn’t end there. When the music switched to MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This,” Tillman brought even more energy to the stage, performing iconic 90s moves and nailing the famous Hammer shuffle, sending the audience into even louder cheers.
What made the moment even more impressive was that he performed the entire routine in full police uniform, never missing a beat while dancing alongside the students.
One viewer summed it up perfectly: “This is amazing! We need more of this.”
Beyond entertaining the crowd, Tillman’s performance reflected his broader mission—to build positive relationships between law enforcement and the community. He has also worked on initiatives like Breaking Barriers United, aimed at strengthening trust, transparency, and connection between officers and the public.
The video of his farewell dance quickly went viral, with many praising his energy, humor, and dedication.
In the end, Officer Tillman turned what could have been a sad goodbye into a joyful celebration that left a lasting impression on everyone at the school.
