About a year ago, during Secret Santa at work, my coworker Sarah gifted me a beautiful silver ring with a small emerald. We’d always been on friendly terms, so I wore it often, never questioning the gesture.

Recently, though, I noticed a faint groove around the stone. Curiosity got the better of me, and after some effort, I managed to twist it open.

Inside was a tiny hidden note. Just two words: “Hate you.”

I was stunned. For an entire year, I believed Sarah and I got along fine. Now I can’t stop wondering—was it meant as a cruel joke? A mistake? Or has she secretly disliked me all this time?
