Ellie came up with the sweetest idea when she found out that her 86-year-old customer would be spending Christmas alone.
You can get all the things you need at the grocery store. Things like canned goods, fresh vegetables, and toiletries can all be found there.
But there’s one important thing we don’t always think to look for at the grocery store: friends.
When a grocery store worker found out that one of her regular customers would be spending Christmas alone, they became friends.
When she heard that, she decided to make his holiday a little brighter on her own.
After three years on the job, a young worker at a grocery store thought she had seen everything.
Ellie Walker was just like any other worker at a grocery store. At age 22, she worked at a British grocery store chain called Sainsbury’s, but she didn’t think of it as a place to meet people.
She loved her job because it gave her the chance to chat with customers and other employees.
Ellie thinks of herself as a friendly person, but she didn’t think it would go this far.
When a customer told her something that broke her heart, she decided to take action.
Edwin Holmes, who was 86 years old, told her he would be alone on Christmas Day.
Edwin said that at his age, he no longer had any close friends or family with whom he could spend the holidays.
After 45 years of marriage, his wife died in 2006.
His daughter and grandchildren also live in Australia, so they can’t all get together for the holidays.
That meant he would be alone all day, and Ellie didn’t like the idea of that.
So, she asked him to join her for Christmas dinner so that they could make a special memory together.
Ellie broke down in tears because of one particular part of the story.
Both Ellie and Edwin were looking forward to their food. Edwin even wore a suit and brought a bouquet of flowers for Ellie to dinner with him.
He told her that this was the first time he had gone out on a date in 55 years.
He was also nervous, which made Ellie feel so bad that she started to cry. Seeing how happy he was meant a lot to her.
Ellie has always liked Edwin, so it meant a lot to her to make a special memory with him.
She says to The Sun,
“There’s no question that he’s my favorite customer. He is the cutest guy ever and talks a lot. I thought that if it were my grandpa and he was alone, I would want someone to talk to him.”
It’s so important that she did something to make Edwin feel less lonely, because being alone is bad for our health, especially for older people.
WebMD says that being alone can cause or make your dementia worse, add to your stress, and make you more likely to die young.
Spending time with other people not only makes us happier, but it can also save our lives.
After this one Christmas dinner, they got to know each other better.
Who would have thought that the grocery store could have so much to offer?
Since their first date over Christmas dinner, Ellie and Edwin have made it a habit to spend time together often.
Now, they often get together for coffee and talk about what’s going on in their lives.
Even though they like this new routine, it doesn’t come as a surprise because they always liked talking to each other at the store.
