A young child from Oklahoma endured abuse from his biological parents, leading to his eventual adoption. When he met his adoptive parents, he shared a heartfelt letter that is sure to stir deep emotions.

Child abuse includes a variety of harmful actions or neglect by parents or caregivers that can cause harm, distress, or danger to a child. This can range from neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and exploitation, to emotional abuse.

DREAMCATCHERS FOR ABUSED CHILDREN, INC. is a non-profit organization focused on preventing child abuse and neglect. Their mission includes educating the public about various aspects of child abuse, such as symptoms, intervention, prevention, statistics, reporting, and providing resources for victims’ recovery.

Recently, the organization shared a letter written by a child who had suffered abuse from both of his alcoholic biological parents. The heart-wrenching narrative reveals a childhood lacking in love and joy, marked instead by cruelty, neglect, and deprivation. This story serves as a stark reminder of the harsh realities some children face.

A concerned neighbor, having witnessed distressing events at the child’s home, reported the situation to Child Protective Services. Upon intervention, the child was placed under the care of the Dreamcatchers for Abused Children group, ensuring a safer future.

The emotional weight of the child’s experience is evident in what he wrote after finding a loving and suitable home through the organization. His simple wishes reflect a longing for the basic necessities that many take for granted:

“Things I want for my family:

Food and water
Please do not hit me
A home with running water and electricity
I’m looking for love
Mom and Dad never argue
I’m not interested in drugs
Please do not harm my dogs
Help with schoolwork
Nice, clean clothes
No lice, no insects in the home
Clear the clutter
Make the bed and cover it
Please do not sell my toys
Fair treatment
Don’t get wasted
A home with a television
Allow me to keep my school supplies
Good shoes
My own comb and soap
A safe, beautiful home with a heated coat
A toothbrush”
The stark contrast between these basic desires and the comfortable lives many enjoy serves as a poignant reminder to appreciate what we have. This child’s list teaches a profound lesson: what may be routine for some is another’s heartfelt wish.
