Mandy K, a 32-year-old woman, was severely injured by a polar bear at the Berlin Zoo on Friday after jumping into the enclosure during feeding time. She bypassed a fence, hedges, and a wall to enter the area.
Once inside, a bear attacked her, causing serious wounds to her arms, legs, and back. Despite the efforts of six zookeepers to intervene, one bear continued biting her before they successfully scared it off and rescued Mandy.
Following surgery, Mandy is now recovering in the hospital. Zoo representatives emphasized the dangers of her actions and the difficulty faced during the rescue. It was later revealed that Mandy, a teacher, had been struggling with finding employment, leading to her distress.
This incident has sparked discussions on mental health and the pressures individuals face in difficult circumstances.
The zoo is now reassessing security measures and urging visitors to respect safety barriers and the risks of interacting with wild animals.
