Investigators have found human remains inside the vehicle of a woman who vanished in Arkansas 23 years ago along with her child.

The discovery was made by Adventures With Purpose, a charity focused on solving cold cases nationwide.  According to a statement from the Pope County Sheriff’s Office, the group located Samantha Jean Hopper’s car submerged in eight feet of water on Tuesday.

Hopper had been reported missing on September 11, 1998. At the time, she was said to be on her way to drop off her daughter, Courtney Holt, before attending a concert in Little Rock. However, neither she, her child, nor her blue Ford Tempo were ever found.

The car, located under eight feet of water, contained human remains, which have been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab in Little Rock for DNA testing.

The Pope County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude for their role in helping resolve the 23-year-old mystery, offering condolences to the family of Samantha Hopper and Courtney Holt.

Samantha’s daughter, Dezarea, shared on a memorial website that her mother had been nine months pregnant when she disappeared, while her sibling was around two years old. Dezarea described the discovery of their bodies as a “relief.”
